HOSPITAL SERVICES

SOUTHERN AMALGAMATION COMMISSION’S INQUIRY (Per Press Association] INVERCARGILL. Nov. 24. A commission set up by the Government to inquire into the administration of the hospital service in the Southland, Wallace and Fiord hospital boards’ districts opened to-day before Mr W. H. F. Freeman. SM., as commissioner. The inquiry was brought about as a result of representations to the Government from ratepayers in the Wallace electoral district to amalgamate the Riverton land Southland hospital services and thus provide access to improved medical and hospital services for the people of the Wallace district. At the present time the people of the Wallace district are not permitted to enter the Southland Hospital for treatment, and as a result of dissatisfaction in past years with the services available at Riverton Hospital, an amalgamation committee was set up to petition Parliament. Improved conditions at. Riverton during the past two years have resulted in a partial change over of opinion and a case has been prepared by those opposed to amalgamation. All day was occupied in examining witnesses In support of the petition. The inquiry will be resumed tomorrow.
