EDUCATION AND POLITICS

Sir,- I notice in the monthly report of the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board that he takes exception to me accepting an invitation to open the new school at Tangimoana. He also takes me to task for interesting myself sufficiently to be responsible for getting this school erected, suggesting that a member of Parliament should not interest himself in matters of this kind, as it savours of party politics. The chairman's mind must be continually running along party lines, otherwise he would never have stooped Io a statement of this, kind, when the welfare of the children of Tangimoana was at stake. I wish to assure Mr Hemingway that my views regarding the education of our children are of a much higher standard than his mind will allow him to suggest. I make no apologies for the action I have taken in getting these children transferred from a building that was a blot on our educational system. This building must, have been known to the chairman of lhe board, and I am wondering if any attempt has ever been made by the board to have this matter rectified. If an attempt has been made, I can only put the existence of this state of affairs down to the very poor persuasive powers of the chairman of the board. I would suggest that instead of the chairman taking up the vain and narrow view of not attending because he was not asked to open the school, he should have been pleased to have associated himself with the function, thereby casting his vanity aside in the interest of the welfare of the children. In conclusion 1 want to assure Mr Hemingway that his tirade will not deter me in interesting myself in the welfare of our children.--1 am. etc. C. L. HUNTER. M.P.
