Messrs. J. C. Small, W. Meikle, A. Waghorne and T. Pritchard (all of Wanganui) were welcomed as visitors by the president.. Rotarian E. F. Bethwaite, at yesterday’s luncheon of the Wanganui Rotary Club. Appreciation of the interest, being taken in the affairs of Wanganui by Mr W. J. Gibson Hughes, president, of the Wanganui Tourist and Development League, was expressed at last night’s executive meeting. Mr F. C. Atkinson said it was not generally known that when the Parliamentary party visited the city recently, the members of it were the guests of Mr Hughes. The same applied to other visitors from time to time. Mr G. F. Pownall subsequently moved that the league’s appreciation of what Mr Hughes was doing for Wanganui be recorded in (he minutes. The motion was carried. Reference Io lhe death of Mr Tancred Ashley Cooper was made by Mr G. F. Pownall at last night’s executive meeting of the Wanganui Tour’s!. and Development League. Mr Pownall said the deceased gentleman was secretary of lhe Wanganui and District Development League for a considerable period, during which he gave a good deal of his time, strength and energy to the progress of the league and the interests of Wanganui. Even during his illness he acquainted himself with lhe affairs of the city and often ennuired as to the advancement of the league. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence. lhe funeral of the late Mr Tancred A. Cooper took place at the Aramoho Cemetery, Wanganui, yesterday and was attended by a cortege representative of the walks of life with which Mr Cooper had been connected. Mr Cooper was well known among the farming community, having originally come Io settle in Wanganui as organiser of the Wanganui Provincial district of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. At that time the union was embraced in the Wellington district, hut as the result of Mr Cooper’s efforts several Wanganui district branches were formed and Wanganui obtained separate provincial status. He loaves a widow, two sons and a daughter. A brother. Mr H. R. Cooper, resides in Palmerston North. OPPOSITION LEADER i BRIEF VISIT TO WANGANUI ARRIVAL LAST MGHT 1 The Hon. Adam Hamilton. Leader •of the New Zealand National Party and of the Opposition in Parliament, arrived in Wanganui last night jn the course of a planned North Island itinerary. He attended five meetings yesterday, at Palmerston North, Feilding, Bulls, Marton and Wanganui, respectively, and in each centre, where he mot. members of the executives of the recently created party, he received encouraging offers of support. Mr. Hamilton met the Wanganui executive at the Rutland Hotel last, night, where he is staying until nine o'clock this morning. He indicated the lines on which he proposed to lead the party and impressed those present with his courageous ability to knit the anti-Labour forces into a solid whole. It is Mr. Hamilton's intention to continue his tour to Taranaki to-day and he will leave for Hawera and St’at lord this morning. The itinerary will then take him to Te Kuiti and theme to Hamilton, where he and Mr. W. .1 Broadfoot. M.P. for Waitomo, and Mr F. W. Doidge will speak from lhe same platform. A visit to Auckland will follow and thence south again to Paeroa, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Tauranga, Rotorua, Opotiki and Gisborne. He will reach Gisborne on Sunday nigh! and will meet the Gisborne executive on Monday. Following that he will travel to Napier. AT PALMERSTON NORTH. [Ter Press Association] PALMERSTON N.. Nov. 23. 'Lhe Leader of the Opposition, Hon. A. Hamilton, commenced an organisation tour of the North Island here today, proceeding in the afternoon to Feikling. At both places he addressed the local executives of the National Party, emphasising the need for loyalty and unity. A motion was carried congratulating him on his selection as leader and expressing loyalty. Wanganui Courthouse The necessity for rebuilding the Wanganui Courthouse is again receiving the careful attention of lhe Wanganui Law Society. It. has been forcibly stressed that the housing of a very valuable collection of law books in a wooden building is running a serious risk of loss through fire. It is understood that a majority of the society are very keen to have a new building as quickly as possible.
