The Wanganui Chronicle. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1936. THE AIRLINE
r THI< Hun. Kobeil Semple has given the expected reply to Uie Wanganui request that, the city Im included in the North Issu'd Air Service. He has poinb' out the obvious, that is, in ils initial stages, the airline is pri. 1 . ily a terminal proposition. The line is first to connect the cities of Auckland and Wellington. Following Wanganui’s agitation to have its aerodrome made a port of call, other provincial cities have also conic, forward with similar requests. If these requests were conceded, then the airline would not commence to operate at all. At the moment it is contemplated that a supply service will contact with toe main airline at Palmerston North, so Wanganui is not to lie left out of consideration. If. however, it is felt that Wanganui should be made a compulsory stopping place for the through 'planes, the request resolves itself info a matter oi' business. Il the traffic is here the airline can be expected to call at Vi anganui in its own interests, consequently it really needs no coercion at all. What the Minister has to watch is that he does not pul too heavy a load upon the licensees, and naturally the licensees themselves arc not looking to make losses. It is estimated Hui. to make Wanganui a place of call would involve the airline in •in expenditure of £BOOO a year. If Wanganui enthusiasm can he carried to a sufficient height that this sum can Im guaranteed, doubtless a good ease eould be made out for requesting the Minister to alter his decision. If, on the other hand, no such guar aiiloe is forthcoming, there is not much that ran be said against 1 hat decision.
