RETURNED SOLDIERS TOURNEY AT DANNEVIRKE SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION A very successful initial returned soldiers' golf tournament was held over the week-end at Dannevirke on the local club’s links. Over 100 "Diggers” were on parade, drawn I from all parts of the Wellington ProI vince. The day was gloriously fine | and the links in capital order, the picturesque surroundings evoking favourable comment from all those who were playing on the links for the first time. J. Goss, jnr., N.Z. Rifle Brigade (Wanganui), was successful in winning the championship with a gross score of 74 and became the first holder of the German helmet mounted on an oak stand. Ekstedt and Chapman, N.Z. Field Artillery (Palmerston North) tied for runnerup with a gross score of 80. The teams’ match was won by the Rifle Brigade with a net score of 207. The various regimental units matches were keenly competed for and in several events it was necessary to toss for the winner. An “estaminet” at the 7th. tee and-a "rum issue” under the railway bridge by the 14th. tee were innovations that proved very popular with all ranks. Specially printed score cards and a loud-speaker from which is-

sued “commands" and witty comments were also features which appealed to the players. At the conclusion of the day's play the prizes were presented by Colonel Wilder, who complimented the winners of the various events and also paid a warm tribute to the committee for the excellent way in which the tournament had been conducted. Visitors from the various districts represented replied, thanking the Dannevirke returned soldiers for a wonderful day.
