WANGANUI EAST CLUB OPENING SPLASH HELD LARGE CROWD PRESENT A large crowd of some 600 members and supporters of the Wanganui East Swimming Club and the general public atended the opening splash of the club on Saturday afternoon, the glorious weather and the idea! swimming conditions being much appreciated. During the afternoon a programme of music was played by the Wanganui Garrison Band, and afternoon tea was provided by the ladies’ committee. Dr. K. Christie, president of the club, extended a welcome to the visitors and expressed pleasure at seeing such a large crowd, the attendance being taken as an indication of the general public’s approval of the work being done by the club. Dr. Christie introduced the speakers for lhe afternoon, these being Mr W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, Mr J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, and Mr P. L. Dickson, president of the Wanganui Swimming Centre. Mr Rogers expressed appreciation of the opportunity to attend, and declared the season open. He referred to the keen interest that lhe Wanganui City Council took in encouraging swimming, and appealed to the general public to support those who were teaching and improving swimming. That it. was an excellent idea on the part of the Wanganui East Club to keep up the custom of holding an opening splash was the opinion expressed by Mr Dickson, who commended the club on its initiative. The value of swimming clubs to the community should be generally appreciated, said Mr Cotterill, who went on to urge that, people should take advantage of the Wanganui Swimming Centre's “learn-to-swim” activities so that they would become 100 per cent swimmers. Later in the afternoon, after Mr Cotterill and Dr. Christie had “broken the ice" by diving in to make the “opening splash," Mr Ormond Wilson, M.P. for Rangitikei, spoke briefly. An exhibition swim was given by Miss Patty Watts, whose display was heartily applauded. The officials for the day were as follow:--Office, Messrs C. Bradley and J. Scott; timekeeper, Mr J. The polo match between Wanganui East and Aramoho was one of the highlights of the day. Wanganui East defended the deep end. Play was fast, and after some forward play. Corp scored for Aramoho. Several attempts by Wanganui East were frustrated and give-and-take play followed, Marshall just missing a goal by throwing too high as the first half ended. During the second half play became even faster and Marshall evened by scoring a nice goal. Aramoho scored soon after and after some more give-and-take play, Wanganui East asserted themselves and iscored twice before the end with the final score: Wanganui’East 3; Avenue Mr J.
