SYDNEY HEAT WAVE
DESTRUCTIVE FIRES OCCUR DAMAGE IN BLUE MOUNTAINS. MANY HOMES DESTROYED. IBy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Nov. 6, 9.26 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 6. Heat wave conditions prevail in New South Wales. There are destructive fires along the coastline. The temperature in the city during the past two days has been near the century. So thick is the smoke haze on the coast that visibility outside the port, is less than a mile. Fires of an extensive character in the Blue Mountains have already destroyed many homes, a considerable mileage of fencing and hundreds of people are engaged in fire-fighting. The main highway over the Blue Mountains became impassable in the vicinity of Glenbrook and Springwood owing to the ferocity and extent of the fire and density of the smoke. Fifteen homes have been destroyed in the mountain foothills. One hundred police have been sent from Sydney to-night to assist in fighting the flames which are raging on a thirty miles front between Glenbrook and Kurrajong. The Unitarian Church, in Oxford Street, Sydney, was burnt down this afternoon.
