TANNERS’ DISPUTE

UNUSUAL POSITION EMPLOYERS' HIGHER OFFER {Per Press /ucodation] WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. The unusal position of employers in counter-claims offering skilled tanners higher wages than they claimed arose in the dispute between the Wellington Tanners’ Union and Payes Tannery, Ltd., the employees claiming 2s 6d and the employers offering 2s 7 lei. A 40-hour week was agreed upon, from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 a.m. daily, with provision for shifts when necessary between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., providing a shilling extra was paid. Both the claims and counter-claims set down the wages of labourers at 2s 3d' an hour. The managing director said that the offer to skilled tanners was not loaded. A skilful tanner was necessary, and it took a good man to do the work. The offer was agreed tc, and overtime rates were arranged, the statutory holidays, and meal money of Is 6d. The only remaining matter is the wages of youths, which will be discussed this afternoon.
