PUTIKI CHURCH

GIFT FROM LORD AND LADY BLEDISLOE £25 FOR CARVED PRAYER DESK Canon W. G. Williams, of Wanganui, has received a cheque for £25 from Lord and Lady Bledisloe to provide a carved prayer desk for the Putiki Church. This gift is to form a memorial to Rev. Arona Te Hana, who carried on the work of the church at Putiki from 1876 to 1882 and will be symbolical of the great interest Lord and Lady Bledisloe took in the welfare of the Maori people during Lord Bledisloe’s term as Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand. When he was opening the Putiki Church bazaar some six years ago Lo r d Bledisloe expressed a wish to donate such a sum to be used in the way mentioned so as to encourage local Maori art. In keeping with that wish the carvers necessary to complete the desk will be chosen from members of the Whangqnui tribe who have learnt the art during the progress of the decorations being carried out within the new church.
