MEETING AT RAETIHT

I Members of the Raetihi Women’s I Institute met in the Druids’ Hall on Thursday, October 8, the attendance (being approximately 70. It was pleas'ing to see Mrs Anderson in the chair i after being absent for several meetjings owing to illness. 1 A warm welcome was extended to all visitors and friends. A special welcome was given to two Maori visitors who are hoping to start a Maori Institute, and they were wished every success. A welcome home was extended to Mrs Ritchie, who has returned after a six months’ tour abroad. A special meeting was announced and will be held in the Druids’ Hall on Saturday, November 7, when members will be given an opportunity ot meeting Mrs Kelso and to hear hetspeak. Members are asked to bring afternoon tea. Mothers with institute babies were asked especially to attend as an opportunity will be given to present babies with a Post Office savings box. Members were also reminded ot the institute dance, which has been arranged for October 20 in an effort to raise funds. Members were given their potatoes for the potato competition. These were kindly donated by Mrs Proude. The drama circle entertained with a delightful sketch entitled “Cats ana Kittens,” under the leadership of Mrs Feltham, who has been appointed producer of the drama circle, with Mrs Soar secretary. Those taking part, were Mesdames Feltham, Soar, Salter, and Hussey, and they are to be congratulated on their fine performance. Miss Scarrow and Mrs McNie were in charge of the "bring and buy” stall, which did good business. An interesting array of articles was on display as a result of an exhibition of work done this winter. The result of the competitions were as follow: For best collection of polyanthus, Mrs Ward 1, Mrs Mitchinson 2, Mrs Sandford 3. Shortbread: Mrs K. Lynch 1 and 2, Mrs Ward 3. A dainty afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Jack, Powell, S. Moore, and Frederickson. The Christmas cake which was made and donated by Mrs Rieper went to Mrs Dobson. Members’ attention is drawn to Mrs Alfred Watts' visit to Taihape next month, those wishing to attend Taihape on that day are asked to get in touch with the secretary. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. A successful card party was held last month by the institute in aid of the town queen in connection with the carnival, and as a result 780 votes were added to her list.
