MONTHLY MEETING HELD ’ REPORT AND GENERAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held in , Wanganui yesterday, Cr. Wm. Morrison presiding. Also in attendance 'were Crs. J. Cameron, R. Farley, T. Alexander, L. T. Jones. A. A. Winwood, F. Handley. R. Laird and R. Richardson. Genera! Business The meeting opened at 10 a.m., instead ol 10.30 a.m. as previously, and a resolution authorising the change to be of a permanent nature was carried. Mr. C P. Fifleld was granted permission to cut cocksfoot on the Lilybank and Kaikokopu Roads. The chairman and Crs. Laird and Jones were appointed to represent the county at the meeting to be held in Wanganui shortly to consider proposals for the national defence of the Dominion. The Department of Internal Affairs I drew attention by circular tetter to j the provisions of the Local Elections i and Polls (temporary) Amendment I Act, 1936, which was recently intro- ' duced into Parliament by the Minis--1 ter of Internal Affairs and which has now become law. The purpose of the Act is to enable defaulting ratepayers to vote, to nominate candidates, or to be nominated as candidates at local body elections, if their rates are paid up till March 31. 1934. The restoration of the qualification does not apply if any rates owing by the ratepayer concerned during the financial year ended March 31, 1934, have been remitted or compounded (except remission or postponement of the 10 1 per cent, penalty). This Act remains 1 i in force until Decemoer 31, 1937. 1 Cr. Cameron moved that the wages of the county surfacemen be in- ' creased from 13s a day to 14s. 7 he motion was seconded by Cr. Alexander and carried. The men are to be employed under the same conditions as at present. Mr. K. Tomsett’s tender of 1660 ’ for the supply and delivery of 1800 1 cubic yards of shell rock on the ’ Rangitatau East Road was accepted. The council decided to provide the pipes, transport and the quarrying of the necessary stone in connection with the swimming pool which is being reconstructed at Maxwell. Dix) submitted the following report for the month of September: — "Auckland-Wellington Highway. Maintenance carried out comprised clearing slips, cleaning wateriables, repairing shoulders ol asphalt ana grading. "Brunswick-Westmere Riding: The Rapanui, Springvale-Francis, HeadsMosston, Blueskin and Wanganui River Highways were metal paicheu and graded. Drains were cleaned along the Rapanui Highway and tne asphalt was patched. T’h® section ol the Springvale-Francis Highway adjacent to Churton Creek is being remetalled. the roadway was practically bare ol metal; the recently-spreau metal situated between Seafield ana Westmere Road junctions has again been blinded. The Cameron. Pickwick, Virginia, Mission, Mitchell and Smith Roads and Clarkson Avenue were graded. T’he Brunswick, Livingstone, Watt, Virginia, Mission and | Waireka Roads and Roberts Avenue j were metal patched. Slips were I cleared along Kowhatunui, BrunsI wick, Riverbank and Tokomaru East i and West. Roads and Roberts Avenue. The Mowhanau Stream bridge, Russel Road, has been repaired. The temporary bridge on the Riverbank Road near Te Korito, which was erected last February after the cyclonic storm, has been widened. The remetalling of a section of the Lilybank Road has been completed and the remetalling of a section of the Blueskin Highway is nearly completed. “Waitotara Riding.—The large slips that occurred on the Waitahinga Hill on the Rangitatau East-Watershed Highway have been cleared; the highway has been widened at several under slips on the Paparangi Hill. The widening of the Parekama Hill, Waitotara Valley Highway, continues to be carried out under the No. 5 Scheme of employment; watertables were cleaned and slips were cleared and the highway was metal patched. Maintenance work was carried out along the Junction, Rangitatau West, Waitotara, Brewer and Handley Roads. The reinstatement of the swimming pool at Birch Park was begun. "Mosston Riding.—The SpringvaleFrancis, Heads-Mosston Highways, 1 Surrey and Oxford Roads and Jones Avenue were graded. The metalling of Cathro Road has been completed, Fitzherbert Avenue was metal patched. Fifty yards of metal hive yet to be supplied before the metalling contract on Springvale-Francis Highway is completed. "Tokomaru Riding: Good progress is being made with the formation of the deviation at Mill Flat Ahu Ahu I Road; slips at Sandy’s Bluff continue to occur; the filling at Moukahu has been reinstated. Slips were cleared along the Watershed, Taunoka, Kauarapaoa, Parinui and Ahu Ahu Roads. The section of the Kauarapaoa Road I that was widened near Raoriki recently hs been metalled. a < The report was adopted.
