GENERAL The Salvation Army held a gift evening on Wednesday in the nuluv«. of a ‘dairy court.' Tnere was a goon attendance and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. Hems were given by Miss Armitage, Mrs. Berginan, Mrs. Mosen, Messrs. Rose, Laing, ana the corps officers. The Women s institute arranged a card evening, which was held in the Druids’ Hall on Monday nignt, in aid of the Town Queen in the Show Association carnival. Bridge and euchre were played, the winners being Mesdames Waters and C. Lynch and Messrs. R. Chamley and Parkes. The secretary of the Wai mar ino branch of the Farmers’ Union (Mr. W. Jack? has received advice that the Minister of Labour (Hon. 11. T. Armstrong) has agreed to allow the planting of shelter belts and the erection of fences to protect them to be regarded as developmental work coming in the scope of scheme 4B contracts. The Raetihi Farmers' Union recently approached the Hon. Frank Langstone with regard to the services of relief workers for eradicating ragwort. The secretary has received word that the Minister of Labour ha-, agreed that where the local authority is prepared to act as the employer the services of registered and eligible unemployed workers may be utilised under scheme No. 5 in accordance with conditions laid down by the Minister. Members of the Bible Class Union met together for tea and a social hour on Thursday evening, after which Rev. Morton Ry burn gave an interesting address on mission work n India, illustrated with lan<ern news. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sandford left or a holiday in the north by motorcar on Tuesday afternoon. Members of the Farmers’ Union have been advised that there is no protection on deer at present in any part of New Zealand. Where private persons experience any difficulty in disposing of the skins the Department of Internal Affairs will accept and pay for those skins coming up to requirements. Where skins do not come up to first grade they will, when considered by the department to be marketable, be accepted at a lower >ate. The department will also supply ammunition at a cheap rate for use in killing the deer. A number of members of the Ohakune Wrestling Club paid a visit to the Raetihi Club on Tuesday night and indulged in friendly bouts.
