TO-DAY’S BIG EVENT ' F.LGBY MATCHES AND HIGHLAND DISPLAY. Promoters of the Wanganui Police v. Press encounter are looking forward to fine weather to-day on the occasion of the annual activity to raise funds for deserving causes, such as the Plunket Society, St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. John Ambulance, Free Ambulance, Injured Players’ Fund, Home of Compasion and others. The Wanganui Highland Pipe Band is to co-operate and stage its drummajor’s display. 12 minutes of marching, slow marching, wheeling, turning, counter-marching and maze marching. Three Rugby matches arc to be played and the programme is to be timed as under: — 1.15 p.m.: Kick-off in the St. Pat’s (Palmerston North) v. Wanganui Marist teams (played in recogni- ■ lion of the Home of Compassion, which is to be assisted by the Police-Press funds among other organisations). 2.20 p.m.: Kick-off in the Police v. Press match. J p.m.: Pipe Band’s drum-major dis- i play. t 3.15 p.,.„: Kick-off in the Old Boys v. Kaierau match for the Charity Cup. 8 p.m.: Dance in the Peter Pan Hall. At union tickets are selling wed. They will admit purchasers to the afternoon’s programme and will participate in tne alluvial gold art union, the prizes for which will be £2O first, and five prizes of £1 each, all in alluvial gold. Co-operation between Police and Press in Wanganui has already raised over £l7OO for deserving causes. The match began in a small way and graclualy built up Io become the annual day for deserving causes in Wanganui so far as Rugby is concerned. Police are steadily launching out in sport in New Zealand, and the annual Wanganui encounter with the Press is looked forward to by the force all over the Dominion. Wellington. Christchurch and Auckland have all entered the atmosphere of good work in the realm of sport, and the indications point to the Dominion some day fielding regular police teams in Rugby competitions. Tha: is done in South Africa, and in Australia police take a big share in the rowing programme. There is everything to encourage the police to step out and become, in a full sense, part of the sporting community in which they live. This afternoon's match, another of a series of annual encounters with the knights of the inky way, will bring the force a step • nearer the goal one can see in the near future—police playing Rugby cricket and tennis, and rowing with with the best of them.
