THE DOUGLAS SYSTEM Sir,—“G.J.B. " writing on behalf of the W.D.C. of D.S.C. Movement ui N.Z. (.IncJ, must be treated as voicing the oliicial views of that movement. He argues that it is unreasonable to ask for details of the method by which the Douglas objectives are to be realised. He says that doesn’t concern us—any more than it concerns a buyer of a radio set, how or why it , works. This is, of course, fallacious and is no argument at all. When we v ~n a radio set we have a demonstration land hear it working satisfactorily, so, ;we buy it. We are told it will work and are shown that it will work. The Douglasites say “we have a plan which will abolish poverty an I war, etc.’’—but unlike the rad.o set we can't have a demonstration so we naturally ask what is this plan? Will it work? As “G.J.B.' has instanced a radio set, will he tell us whether he would buy an attractive looking box from anyone merely because the vendor asserted it was better than any other well-established radio set ? We think he would ask for a demonstration or some evidence that it was all that was claimed for it. The vendor might say: “Don't. you worry about all that, I know it will work.’’ Exactly as “G.J.8.” says: “We know that the Douglas Social Credit pronosals will overcome th? paradox of poverty amidst plenty.'’ He can’t expect reasonable men to accept his unsupported statement any more than he would himself buy a box, asserted to be a radio set. without a demonstration of its practicability. —We are, yours etc..
