Card Afternoon. An exceptionally successful card afternoon was held by the members of the Wanganui East Croquet Club this week, when .he winners of the games were Mesdames Shaw and Perry. The hostesses were Mesdames Halligan and Currin. Church of England Tennis Club. The third annual dance of the Church of England Tennis Club will be held in the Christ Church Schoolroom on Wednesday, September 23. Friends and members of other clubs are cordially invited to be present. Dancing will be from 8.15 to 12.30, the Palais Dance Band supplying the music. Tennis Afternoon. A novel tennis afternoon was given by Mrs Bogle at the residence of her daughter, Mrs V. Grace, Halswell Street, on Monday last. A delicious afternoon tea was srved by Mrs Grace, assisted by Miss Hewetson, after which Mrs Bogie’s girl friends joined in a game of tennis. Those present were: Mesdames Hopkirk, Hanton, Collins, Simpsop, Horn, Johnson, Tizard, Hewetson, Cunningham and Misses Barltrop and Wilson (Nelson). Boat Chib Dance. The combined rowing clubs are holding a dance in the Union Boat Club’s social hall to-night (Saturday), September 19. This is the third of a series of dances being held and, judging by the success of the recent dance, dancers should enjoy a happy evening’s entertainment. Good music and novelties are being provided. Hibernian Society’s Jubilee. During the week-end the silver jubilee of the Hibernian Society will

take place, the functions including Mass at 8 o'clock at St. Mary’s Church, and in the afternoon a provincial council meeting in Victoria Hall. The next evening, in the same hall, the banquet is timed for 8 p.m., and on Tuesday night the jubilee dance will take place, also in Victoria Hall. Golf Tournament Visitors. The Wanganui ladies’ provincial golf tournament will take place next week, and many players from outside clubs will be competing. Among the many visitors arriving early next

week will be Miss K. Sullivan (Opunake). Miss Mclvor and Miss I. Seifert (Feilding), Miss Nell Collerton (Taihape), Miss Rhodes and Mrs Oldworth (Silverhope), Mrs Alan Marshall. Miss Cochran. Miss J. FullertonSmith (Marton), Miss Enid Bell (Wellington). Cecil Wray Fund. Everyone knows o£ the good work done among the disabled and disfigured soldiers of Roehampton Hospital, London, by Mr and Mrs Cecil Wray, who were one-time residents of Wanganui and now live in London. To assist this wonderful work the Wanganui branch of the Victoria League hold each year in October, a function to raise funds to provide Christmas comforts, and outings for these men injured and disfigured m the Great War. As in tne last few years, the function will take the form of a bridge party to be held on the third Thursday in October. Oko'ia W.D.F.U. Birthday. The ninth birthday of the Okoia branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Okoia Hall on Thursday, when representatives from Wanganui and Fordell were present. Mrs Gregor McLeod (president) welcomed the guests. Vases of spring flowers decorated the hall, and a produce stall was set up, Mrs Gray being in charge. A dainty afternoon tea was served and the birthday cake cut. by Mrs A. H. McLean, president of the provincial executive. The competitions were won by Mrs McPhail, Mrs Ramwell (cake), Miss Brandon (cushion). Despite the very* inclement weather there was a good gathering of members and visitors. Ladies' Guild Social Afternoon. The annual “at home” of St. David’s Presbyterian Ladies' Guild, Upper Aramoho, was held in the church hall on Thursday afternoon. Members of the guild had decorated the hall for the occasion with spraxias, Iceland poppies and blue irises. Mrs S. Scott and Mrs Dempsey were the hostesses and welcomed the guests. The Rev., H. Begg presided and congratulated the guild on reaching another birthday, saying St. David's was the youngest child of the Wanganui flock. A pleasing programme comprised songs by Mrs Perrett, Misses Meads, McDonald and Mackintosh; pianoforte solos. Miss Whitlock; elocutionary items, Miss Phyllis Taylor and Miss Alice Rogers. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Tizard. A small posy was presented to each of the performers by Mrs Scott. Apologies were received from Mrs P. Lewis and Miss Doris Hughes. A produce and cake stall was held and good business resulted.
