G. Knight. The matter of tilling the vacancy has been held up pending enquiries into the proposal that the council should buy all the electric power required for use in the borough from the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric-power Board and sell it to the consumer, in which case an electrical engineer would not be needed. Cr. Ryan reported on Friday evening that the proposal had been turned down by the Public Works Department. which would not allow the Power Board to supply the borough with the whole of its (the borough’s) requirements and take over the council’s plant. The town clerk was deputed to write to Mr. Knight, expressing appreciation of his services during the past 15 years. FIRE BRIGADE BALL. The Taihape Town Hall was the scene of much merriment and revelryon Thursday evening, on the occasion of the annual ball, promoted by the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade. This popular social event invariably attracts a big crowd, and this year’s function was attended by over 400 patrons. The hall was artistically decorated with black and white crepe paper streamers arranged in squares, so as to give a draught-board effect, which was both novel and pleasing. In the centre of the hall, suspended from the ceiling, was a large black and white paper bell which harmonised with the other decorations, and added to the beauty of the colour scheme. This bell, it might be mentioned, was beautifully decorated by Miss Rhoda Collings, whose handiwork was the subject of much favourable comment. Green and lemon streamers were used to adorn the supper room which never looked better, thanks to the efforts of Mesdames H. H. Collings and W. E. Constable. The bareness of the walls of both the ballroom and supper room, was relieved by the judicious use of greenery and other adornments. The supper room tables were decorated with spring bulbs and Iceland poppies by Mrs. de Lautour and Miss Fannin. The music was provided by the ever-popular Melody Boys Orchestra, extras being played by the Sundowners’ Orchestra. The M’s.C. were Superintendent Mortland, Deputy-Superintendent Collings, Assistant Foreman B. Flight and Fireman L. Howard. The supper was on the same lavish scale as in the past and the usual delicacies were provided. There were four sittings but everything went off without a hitch as a result of the splendid efforts of the ladies’ committee, consisting of Mesdames Mortland, Adair, Marsh (2). Collings, Constable, McCullogh, B. Flight, Howard, V. Capill, Miss Howard. Members of the brigade waited on the table. The ball was well organised thanks to the efforts of the fire brigade. ably led by Superintendent Mortland and Secretary Adair, and the high standard of entertainment provided in bygone years was fully maintained.
