STOCK MARKETS

WEEKLY SUMMARY

The Farmers’ Co-op. in their weekly review state that it is many years since such ideal weather conditions have been experienced at this time of the year. Quite a growth is evident i everywhere, ideal conditions assisting lambing, big per centages being re- ’ ported practically everywhere and in . the case of dairying, production . seems well up on this period last ■ year. The announcement of the guaranteed price, although apparently disappointing to quite a few, has, at any rate, enabled the dairy farmer ; to budget for next season’s requirements. All markets have remained ■ very firm on those ruling in our last : report, the inquiry in all sections i , being well maintained. Fat Stock. —Values for all classes . of fat stock remain firm, quotations in the fat sheep section being few and far between, sales of best fat ■ ewes being effected from 26s to 28s • with best fat wethers from 31s to 345. 1 Quotations of fat cattle remain firm, ' best prime fat cows from £7 to £7 10s, ! best prime fat heifers from £7 15s to ' £8 ss. : Store Stock.—A particularly free inquiry exists for all classes of store sheep, the difficulty being to obtain quotations, any coming forward ' being quickly absorbed. With lamb- ’ ing in full swing everywhere, quotations of ewes are distinctly limited, sales during the week including 400 mixed aged ewes in lamb to Southdown at 30s. Both ewe and wether hoggets are still keenly inquired after, sales including 220 extra good wether hoggets at 245, with odd sales of good ewe hoggets from 31s to 335. The inquiry for all classes of store cattle remains particularly keen, the marketing being practically devoid of quotations, and every indication of a distinct firmness ruling in this market for some time to come seems assured. Feed conditions in outside districts are so good that few quotations are likely to come to hand and this has occasioned many graziers to turn to the cows ex dairy, with the result enhanced values have been attained at all yard sales, keen competition being witnessed. Dairy Stock. —As was predicted some time ago, quotations of really top heifers are to-day very difficult to procure, best cattle ranging from £8 to £8 10s more medium sorts from £6 10s to £7 10s. Dairy sales at all centres have brought forth keen competition, the yardings in most cases leaving much to be desired as far as quality is concerned, good cattle in all cases being keenly sought after. With the ideal weather conditions existing graziers’ intentions are turning towards the Jersey yearling heifers, here again the market being very devoid of quotations, best cattle bringing from £4 15s to £5 ss, . more medium sorts from £3 15s to £4 ss, quotations of ail classes being . extremely difficult to procure. Yard sales have been well supported, and as reported earlier, keen competition - in all sections being witnessed. 1 Stratford Sale.—There was a capa-

city yarding of dairy cattle and a moderate yarding in the store pens at Stratford on Tuesday. The advertis- | cd herd on account of Mr. R. D. Milne met a good market particularly the very close up cattle. Other individual entries also attracted a lot of attention and good realisations were maintained for good cattle throughout the sale. Prices are as follows: —Forward dairy cows £lO ss, £9 IDs and quite a number at from £7 10s to £9. Later calvers, ot course, realised from £7 5s down to £5 ss. Springing heifers close to prolit £7, £6 15s and £6. Store cattle at late rates. The Eltham sale on Wednesday drew an average yarding in both store and dairy pens. Here, only the most forward cattle were soughtafter and vendors did not offer any backward cattle. However, quite a number of good dairy cows changed hands at prices ranging from £8 to £7 ss. Only a few medium class heifers were yarded, realisations being from £6 down to £4 10s. Realisations In the store pens were quite good and a total clearance was effected in this section.
