OAMARU'S ANNIVERSARY SOME 'HISTORIC DATES [l’cr Press Association] OAMARU, Aug. 6. Oamaru Borough to-aay celebrates the 70th. anniversary of the Borough Council. The town was proclaimed a borough on April 3, 1866. The first council meeting was held on August 6, 1866. Oamaru is the third oldest municipality in the Dominion, its predecessors being Dunedin and Queenstown. Otago was the first province to inaugurate municipal government. The beginnings of Oamaru date back to 1853. It was proclaimed “100” by the provincial government in 1860, and a Town Board was established in 1862. The population in 1866 was about 900. The population to-day, including the contiguous areas within a half-mile of the boundary of the borough, is over 9000. There were no special celebrations of the anniversary in view of the coming Dominion centennial, but the council is entertaining past Mayors, councillors, and prominent men at a dinner to-night.
