LAWN TENNIS

ONE ENGLISHMAN LEFT QUEEN’S CLUB DOUBLES LONDON, June 17. In the third round of the men’s doubles at the Queen’s Cuh tennis tournament, A. Quist t.n<J V. MvGruth (Australia) defeated Billington and Meredith, 6—4, 6—4, J. S Oliff is the only Englishman in the final eight. In the men’s singles, E. G. Maier (Spain) caused a surprise by defeating the American Stratford in the third round. J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) defeated L. Hecht (Czechoslovakia) after a hard fight, 6 —3, 5 —7, 7 —5. Mr Wallis Myers, in an article in the Daily Telegraph, says that in the men’s list at Wimbledon the “seedsmen” have tactfully reduced heartburning by nominating four national champions for the first four daces. A student of world form might question Quist’s ability to defeat. Pudge, but champions remain champions until they lose their titles.
