WAIMARINO COUNTY. COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING At .the monthly meeting of the Wuimarino County Council there were present Crs. D. J. Berry (chairman), F. Bettjcman, C. L. Duigan, R. Lillburu, J. A. Morton, P. Wise and G. H. Price. Mr-. F. Hansen requested the council to lower the culvert across the road down to the depth of a new drain he was putting iu on his property. On the motion of Cr. Duigan it was decided that the engineer be authorised to do the work at Air. Hansen's expense. The engineer reported that a portion of the drain on the eastern side of the Valley road had been cleared to provide more rapid discharge of flood waters. It was agreed that new concrete pipe culverts be set on the old Ohakune road as soon as possible. • Permission .to erect gates on the Alangoihe road was refused a settler. The council agreed to levy a rate of 6-25ths of a penny on property in the Wanganui harbour rating area situated within the county. The chairman, Cr. Duigan, the county clerk and the engineer were appointed representatives to a meeting- of delegates of county councils to be held at Wanganui on Friday to consider industrial matters. It was agreed to support a suggestion made by the Tauranga County Council in a circular letter to the effect that the Minister of Labour be urged that if a union is formed in connection with County Council employees it should be confined to county employees and should be distinct from any other union of employees. Applications for slaughtering-house licences were granted to Messrs. Allan and Gaffey, W. P. Remus, W. G. Wade and T. Mathers. The engineer reported that ail the roads recently renewed and repaired by the Public Works Department in the Ruatiti district have been handed back to the council for maintenance. The maintenance of so much reading in the riding is definitely beyond the financial resources of the council and to save the capital cost a request should be made for a liberal subsidy to assist in carrying out the necessary maintenance work. At least three additional surfacemen will be required to carry out ordinary maintenance. The completion of the metalling- on the Makakahi road has provided a continuous metalled road to the end of Baddeley’s Bluff. This is an instance where settlers have given very material assistance to bring about the desired result. It was decided to close for heavy motor traffic the following roads:— Oruakukuru-Karioi road, from its junction with the Wanganui-Horopiti highway eastwards to its junction with Alakaranui road at Toanui, eastwards to the boundary of the Ohakune borough, locally known as the old Ohakune road. LAND DEVELOPMENT SCHEME. Last week the secretary of the Waimarino branch of the Farmers’ Union received a communication from the Minister of Lands in which the Hon. Frank Langstone says it is not possible for him. to decide at the moment when the sections in the Raetihi block at present being developed by the Small Farm Board will be ready for allotment or how they will be disposed of. The Waimarino branch of the Farmers’ Union has had considerable correspondence on the disposing of these sections and about .two years ago were informed, that the sections would be allotted by ballot to the men engaged on the development. The present Minister of Lands says that was written through a misunderstanding of the position. The question of the method of disposing of Crown lands has not vet been decided.
