RECONSTRUCTION PROPOSALS. REVOCATION OF OTHER HIGHWAYS To urge that the Wanganui River Road reconstruction be put in hand immediately, .m deputation representative of the Wanganui County Council waited on the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) recently, in Wellington. Jt was reported to yesterday’s county meeting that the deputation had received an excellent hearing, and as an outcome it was suggested: - (1) That the Govermenl would subsidise the cost of reconstruction at the rate of £4 for £1 on an estimated cost of £S'.)OO. (2) That the council share, one fifth of the amount (£1(500) be raised from the Treasury and be repayable by the county at £4OO per annum. (3) That the question of maintenance to be left over until he Minister visits Wanganui in the imir future. Reporting to the county meeting yesterday. the clerk (Mr. G. Darbyshir:) who, with (Jr. J. J. I.issette, comprised the deputation, said that he had written to Mr. Ormond Wilson. M.P. for Rangitikei, with regard to the council raiing the sum of £ll>oo from the Treasury. Mr. Wilson had replied Io the effect that such money could not be ob tained from the source suggested unless it had beer, found impossible to raise it in any other way. He sug-’ gested making application to (he Local* Bodies’ Loans Board. If efforts to 11 raise the money in that way failed he would undertake to make representations to the Treasury. That aspect of the matter was left . to the county ch&irman Io go into with Mr. Wilson. It was reported further by the county clerk that he had since received a telegram from the acting ‘ engineer in chief of the Public Work.- < Department (Mr. .1. Woods as follows: | “Is your council agreeable work ; (on River Roadi proceeding conditional n council’s contribution being i payable in four annual instalments, i and on road being declared a main | highway and on the revocation of miles of the Wangaehu Valley High way ? ’ ’ The question of revocation had not 1 been raised in the interview with the I Minister, Mr. Darbyshire stated. After brief discussion it was decided ‘ to advise the Public Works engineer-in I chief, that under no circumstances would the council agree to a revocation < of the Wangaehu Valiev Highway.
