BOROUGH COUNCIL. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kaetih Borough Council was held on Tuesday night when there were present: The Mayor (!Dr. Feltham); Crs. F. Lee. R Ciochetto. T. Shout, Dobson, F. Good man, A. Laing and Sandford. Sympathy. The Mayor said he had to apologise for the absence of Cr. Lynch owing the death of his father. He moved that a vote of condolence and sympathy be accorded Cr. Lynch and rela fives. The motion was carried, the gathering standing in silence fui a few moments. Welcome. The Mayor extended acordial welcome to Cr. Laing upon taking his seat for the first time. He was sure that Cr. Laing would co-operate with the rest of the council and do his best for the good of the borough. Cr. Laing briefly replied. Sunday Pictures. lhe finance Committee recommended that in future detailed statements of the collections and expenses of each .Sunday night’s picture performances be submitted with the proceeds every Monday. The Mayor said he thought that wa> a reasonable request. Cr. Ciochetto said he previously asked that these returns be given but not every week. The recommendation was agreed to. Relief Work. Circulars from the Ministry of Labour Employment division were rereived. It was agreed to subsidise the wages of the men on the No. 5 scheme to the extent of £1 a week commencing from June 1. Cr. Shout said it was intended to pay one-half the men one week and other half the next week. Some men would get Is fid a week from the council and cithers get 5s fid. It was decided that application be made for men under No. 5 scheme for cleaning out the creek between Ballance Street and Pitt Street. A circular was received from the department stating that ♦the men must actually go to work or to the place where they usually meet and a day be officially declared wet before the men were entitled to payment for a wet day. Rates. Tiie resolutions fixing the rate* for the ensuing year were proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Councillor Lee and agreed to. A rebate of 4 per cent, will be allowed for payment within Ju days after duu daUj, General. Uwner s of hedges encroaching on the footpaths will be notified that same must be cut immediately. It w;ts resolved that the council endeavour tv obtain section part II or J. corner of Grey and Islington Streets for street improvements. The Waimarino County Council re plied ’hat it saw no reason for chang ing its decision not to contribute to the maintenance of the Kaetihi cemetery. The application of George Anderson for a slaughterhouse licence wa i . granted on the usual conditions.

Resignation of Town Clerk. The resignation of the town clerk, Mr. Fretchling was acepte.d with regret. The Mayor, Dr. Feltham, staid they were all very sorry to lose the services of the town clerk but they congratulated him on his preferment. He was taking up the position of clerk of the Egmont County in Taranaki. During the short time Mr. Fretchling had been with them he had proved very capable, and thoroughly efficient and the council I was beginning to sit back and things were running smoothly. They wished him every success and good wishes for I his future. I Councillor Lee seconded the motion, which was duly carried The Finance Committee recommended that in consideration of the additional work involved in carrying out the council's loans conversion scheme the council make a bonus of £lO to the town clerk. On the motion of Cr. Lee the recommendation was adopted. It was decided to consider the appli- | cations for the position of town clerk I on Monday next. I Sanitary. The sanitary inspector reported that he made 21 inspections during the month. He thanked the council and the staff for the assistance accorded [ him during his stay in this district. I Mr. W. H. Roy has been appointed inspector for this area. The ranger reported that he had impounded 10 head of stock for the month.
