FEARS IN EGYPT
ITALY’S MIGHT British Authorities Concerned PROPAGANDA UNSETTLING POPULATION lßy Telegraph—Tress Association —Copyright] CAIRO, May 26. Italian propaganda, which is undoubtedly fanning the flames of terrorism in Palestine, is increasing elsewhere in the Near East, especially in Egypt, where the success of the Abyssinian campaign has encouraged large sections of the public to fear that Italy’s might is overshadowing Britain’s. The ruthless use of poison gas occasioned widespread apprehension lest Egypt might be involved in a Struggle with so ruthless an adversary. The Italian community, which is the second largest foreign colony in Egypt, have little difficulty in spreading Fascist propaganda. The British authorities are gravely concerned, and realise that the situation demands the greatest dexterity. The Italian Foreign Office is expected to renew its efforts to persuade Egypt to sign a treaty of non-aggres-sion with the object of dividing Egyptian opinion by suggesting that if Italy guarantees the terriwill be no necessity for Egypt to will be no neeesstiy ior Egypt to concede the British military demands. It is stated, however, tiiat Egyptian politicians do not trust Italian good faith. The Italian arguments nevertheless are unsettling the public, as is the case in Palestine.
