MARTON

LAST WEEK'S HOCKEY (By “Bully”) The big game iu the ladies’ hotkey compctiUuii on Wednesday was undoubtedly that between United and Kia Oia at Porewa. Weather conditions were ideal, but the ground was not adapted tu good hockey. United’s big margin, 7 goals to J, was a big surprise and was solely attributaure to lack of experience on their opponents’ pail. Witu cohesion Kia Ora will be a tough proposition. The first half was all in favour of United, six goals being scored. Kia Ora then rearranged their last lin-e 01. defence, I. Carpenter going info goal and Al. Fitches going to right half, the change proving most effective. Each side scored a goal in the second spe.l. I’. Carpenter was undoubtedly Kia Ora’s best back, and attempted a lion’s share of the work, leaving her own position open on occasion when relieving her sist-er at right full-back. Kia Ora’s half line. E. i itches, BIwikau, and A. Signal, made the mistake early of playing too deep, always inadvisable on a rough ground. This was rectified in the second spell, with noticeable results. Among the Kia Ora forwards, J. Garnett, left wing, did not play up to her excellent form of the previous week, but with coaching would be a “find.” She is very young, with many years of hockey before her. AL Iwikau (inside left), P. Iwikau (bully) and B. Iwikau (inside right) were outstanding. I. White (right wing) was tiie weak link. It seems that N. Hutton is to be kept as United goalie. With coaching she will probably do all that is required there, but- the team would be strengthened if she were moved up to left half and J. Green put in goal. J. Green (right full-back) played her best game to date and was ably assisted by Al. Morrison (left, full-back). F. Hughes, United left half, is improving with every game, and has only to keep it up to be a certainty for rep. honours. E. Low (centre halt) was the best back of the day. particularly on defence, and was always well up in support. D. Green (right half) showed improvement, but there is no excuse for being penalised .19 times I for ‘ ‘ sticks.’ ’ The United forward line was so uniformly good that it is unnecessary to individualise. ft is unfortunate that B. Hunt will be dropping out. It would l*e advisable to have Alarton Park relied before next Wednesday’s game, and the two secretaries of the local clubs should see that it is done. All players arc advised tu keep fit. in view of the trials in the middle of next month to select a team to piny Feiiding lor the Harper Cup al the end of the month. MARTON A. AND P.
