HEALTH AND BEAUTY LECTURE EXERCISES DEMONSTRATED Various matters dealing with health and beauty were dealt with during the course of an intervsting lecture by Madame Lauri Alvvyn in the Opera Hous© last evening. The talk was the last of a series of addresses that have I been well worth listening lo and greatly appreciated. This gifted lecturer was listened to with considerable pleasure by a large audience of women. Her talk included advice on many things concerning the health of women, and beauty was nut neglected. Men as well as women could learn how to profit from their various physical features tu the utmost in the creation of personality. From physical confidence was born mental alacrity. Madame Alwyn spoke about the basic principle of seifexpression, of movement and rhythm, peaking of exercises and spurt, Madame Alwyn said she did nut approve of the very strenuous games some girls go in fur. For instance, rowing, which was not at all suitab.v. Few people realise that it is necessary lo bring back the vitality to the centre of the body.. Our bodies were like engines and wont run when not in proper position. The conditions of the organs are reflected in the faces. Pupils from i'ulmerston North, attractively dressed in green gym. costumes, demonstrated the various exercises. Ail the exercises were of smooth flowing movements, without jerkiness, a ltd all were effortless. Good reducing exercises were shown, and the coircctive set for throat and chin muscles demonstrated, also an exercise which is marvellous fur the spine. Madame Alwyn demonstrated the various wrong postures and showed the correct positions and how to walk in the. right way, also demonstrating movement for poise, mentally and physically, and exercises for slenderising the hips and helping the action of the liver. Exercises for strengthening the vocal cords and the eyes were shown, also balancing and rhythmic exercises, and those for lifting the bust. ‘‘Use your knees as much as you possibly can,” said Madame Alwyn. Women are as old as their knees and chins.” Madame Alwya’s demonstration of the various exercises was watched with gieat interest. At the conclusion numerous questions were asked and answered in a very interesting and satisfactory manner nnd the audience showed its appreciation by wjtrm applause.
