FIRST OPEN TOURNAMENT. Play reached a very h ; gh standard id the opening tournament, of the 1936 season, held by the Wanganui Table lenms Chib on Monday, May 18. Satisfactory entries were received in th<j three events, and the games in the handicap section were close throughout. I’he winner in the men’s open event was H. Jones, of the Post and Telegraph Club, a player who reached a prominent place on the association ladder last year. He is playing well up to form, and will b n hard to beat in the inter-club matches. The runner-up was G. Ross, of the Brunswick Club and of th s player, together with his two brothers, Jim and John, more will be heard as the season progresses These boys are of the hard-hitting type, and play « fast game. A. feature of this event was the defeat of 11. Pyle, of Wellington, bv a. Healey of the Post and Telegraph. Pyle, partnered by Bell, also of Wellington. won the New Zealand men's champion doubles las; year. rhe. handicap event wa« won by R. Hawkins, of the Post and Telegraph Club, and ns he was one of the scratch l men his win was no mean feat. To . reach the final, he played and defeated ' H. Jones, 1.. Nicholls, H. Pvle, and. in the final, John Ross. Hawkins should <1 mb steadily on the ladder this sea son. In the ladies’ open event. Miss O. Glover defeated M-isa Gillies in the final, after playing Mrs. Bowen and Mi«s Maule, in that order. r l'be inter-club competitions are to commence shortly the “knock-out” system again being used. In the A grade mat hes are expected to be keenly contested as the Post and Telegraph. Wanganui. Aramoho and Brunswick Clubs all have strong fours.
