ROWING
HINTS TO COACHES MR. S. M. BRUCE’S PAMPHLET. Although he has been kept busy with international affairs, Mr. B. M. Bruce, the Australian High Commissioner, who rowed in the winning Cambridge University crew T of 1904, has found time to produce for private circulation a pamphlet of hints to rowing coaches, states a Melbourne Herald cable from London. They were originally dictated to Mrs. Bruce during a voyage to Australia in 1919, in response to a request to Mr. Bruce that he should leave some notes as a guide for future coaches of Trinity Hall. Cambridge, crews. After a lapse of 17 years Mr. Bruce agaiu discovered his copy and decided to publish it, unrevised, for “although certain changes, particularly the great increase in the use of swivel rowlocks, have taken place, they do not alter the fundamental principles of good oarsmanship. ’ ’ The strong discipline of Mr. Bruce’s methods is revealed in h : s advice to coaches to “put on the bank” any veteran who- resents being treated as a novice if the the coach is not convinced that he is living up to his reputation
