TO STAND TRIAL
MARRIED WOMAN IN COURT [ Per Press Association ] CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. Ruebena Shirley, a married woman, of 43 Alpha Road, was to-day committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge that or. or about March 15 she used an instrument for an illegal purpose or other nreans with a like intent on Catherine Maria Hill. She pleaded not guilty. Mrs Hill died at tihe Christchurch Hospital on March 27. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5OO with one surety of £5OO or two of £250. Accused is to rep'.rt to the police on alternate days. An inquest into the death of Mrs. Hill, which was heard simultaneously, was adjourned sine die. Chief-Detective Dunlop, conducting the case for the police, called evidence of a system to show that Shirley had been carrying on business for some time. Mr. F. D. Sargent, for accused, objected. The magistrate noted the objection and heard evidence, saying that the point could be argued in the Higher Court.
