THE WANGANUI SALE A MODERATE YARDING STOCK AT LATE RATES ’ Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., report as follows on yesterday’s ■ Wanganui sale: — I To a good attendance of buyers we offered a moderate yarding of all classes. Pigs were the exception and a heavy entry came forward. Porkers were slightly easier, with stores at low rates over a dragging sale. All other classes of stock were at late rates, with i practically a total clearance. Values were:— Sheep.—Prime ewes, J9s, 21s 6d, light 17s t 18s Gd; light wethers, 245, 255; prime lambs, to 25s 9d, fat 18s, 225; forward wether lambs, to 20s 6d, others 13s Gd, 15s 2d; b.f. lambs, to 16s 7d; fattening ewes, 9s 9d, 12s Id Cattle.—Light quality fat bullocks, £B, £8 15s; prime S.H. cows, £5 10s, £5 15s; fat cows, £4 ss, £5 ss, lighter £5, £4 2s 6d; crossbred bullocks, £7 10s; store cows, 30s, £2 10»; dairy cows (close up), to £5 15s; spring calvers, £2 10s, £4. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report a good yarding of sheep, comprising 1303 wether hoggets and 250 breeding ewes at their Marton sale held on Tuesday. Some tip-top pens of hoggets were submitted and although competition was not keen we were fortunate in making practically a total clearance at satisfactory values. Breeding ewes sold freely with a good clearance. Quotations: —Good wether hoggets, L7s, 17s Gd, 18s to 18s Gd; medium hoggets, 14s, 14s Gd, 15s Gd; two-tooth 3wes, r.w. Heavy entries were the rule at tolay’s Addington market except in the store sheep section. Store Sheep.—Values were easier for swes by Is to Is 6d a head, the penning jeing mostly aged sorts. Wethers and ambs, both forward and for carrying jver, were easier by up to Is. Fat Lambs. —A good sale for a nornal yarding. Fat Sheep.—A heavy entry of 5000 Hitchers’ sheep sold at last week’s •ates but lighter sorts were a shade inner, exporters being more keenly in he market than last week. Exporters were in the market for porkers. Baconers made 5d to s}d lb, porkers 5d to 51d. THE WESTFIELD SALE BEEF IN SHORT SUPPLY KEEN COMPETITION FOR PIGS [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, May 7. Values ruled very firm in all sections at the weekly Westfield fat stock sale to-day Beef was again in comparatively short supply, the total yarding being well under 600. Although the recent cold weather has almost stopped pasture growth no heavy yardings are anticipated till after the first frusta, and a firming market is expected in the near future. small offering of steers contained a good proportion of well-finished sorts. Competition was keen and price-levels ruled fully up to those of last week, with extra choice ox beef selling at 20s per 1001 b. In the cow beef market .the quality was mixed but a keen demand brought a slight improvement on lat 3 rates. Extra choice ox beef made 20s per 1001 b, choice and prime 25s to 28s, secondary and plain 20s to 245, to 265, other cow beef 14s to 21s. prime young cow and heifer beef 22s Extia heavy prime steers £ll 10s to £l2 7s 6d, heavy prime £lO 5s to £ll 7s 6d, lighter prime £9 to £lO 2s 6d. light prime £8 to £8 17s 6d, small and unfinished £4 2s 6d to £7 15s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers £7 10s to £8 15s, heavy prime £6 to £7 ss, lighter prime £4 10s to £5 10s, other killable cows £2 to £4. •Calves came forward in full numbers and a bright sale resulted. Medium and light vealers were in particular demand and all young calves showing condition sold well. Month-old sorts made as much as £2 and bobbies sold freely. Runners made 50s to 1235, vealers 31s to 735, bobbies 5s to Ils. There was a small yarding of sheep as a result of the narrow margin between values for forward stores and fat sheep. Buyers were actively engaged in filling their requirements, bringing a firm marked for all wethers and a rise in values for ewes. Maiden ewes sold to as high as 275. The lamb pens contained an average yarding, some of excellent quality, and late rates were easily obtained. Wethers, prime, made 25s to 31s 6d ;

unfinished 20s to 24s 9d; ewes, prime, 17s to 24s 3d, unfinished 10s to 16s 9d; lambs, primp, 18s to 28s, unfinished 9s to 17s. Although there was a "falkng off u the supply of pigs the yarding was still a large one. Competition was keen throughout and late rates were fully maintained. Heavy baconers sold to 675, with an average of 66s 3d for one line of 24. .Store pigs met with a better demand at ’ slightly advanced prices. Average values per lb for fat pigs were from to s}d for baconers and from 5Jd to 5Jd for porkers. Baconers made 50s to 675, porkers 32s to 47s and la r ge stores 17s to 265.
