HEAVY MOTOR TRAFFIC
QUESTION' OF SPEED MINISTER’S [ Ttr T'ress Association I WELLINGTON, May 5. The Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) stated to-day that it was his intention ro review the question of the maximum speeds allowed for heavy motor vehicles under the heavy motor vehicle regulations. “It is proposed in the near future to call a conference of representatives of the Main H'ghways Board, Public Works Department, counties, municipalities, and various motor interests to go into the matter,” Mr. Semple said. “The present maximum speeds were fixed in 1932, when the majrity of trucks were fitted with high pressure pneumatic tyres. High speeds with this type would have resulted in considerable damage to Hie road surfaces, but under the present conditions, with the large majority of trucks equipped with balloon or low pressure tyres, it is considered that ihe speed limits should be reviewed. An investigation into the speeds of modern motor trucks discloses that their economic speeds are considerably in excess of those allowable under the present regulations. This means that the community is not receiving full bone fits of the developments of the modern motor vehicle.’-'
