QUESTION OF THE SITE CITY COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION In order to Cbtra»b]ish unanimity m the city as to the site of a new c.'uithouse and be ready to accept an oiler of a new building immediately it made, the Wanganui, Law Society has written to the City Council asking it it would be prepared to allow the present site in Moutoa Gardens to be taken aver by the Department of Justice. The letter came before the council last night, and pointed out that past experience had prompted the society to make sure ol a site first of all, so as to avoid confukrion later. Discussion was provokad on a motion moved oy the Alayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) that the request be agreed to. This was seconded by Cr. 3oott. Cr. A. E. Halligan wid that the question had been before a previous council and a site in Queen V I cfrk had been suggested. Cr. G. H. Trott objected, on principle, to the mater being decided without careful consideration. He mowed that it be referred to the Finance .Committee for report. Cr. J. D. Crowley secondted hhe amendment. Cr. Scott and Cr. J. Roberiso® supported the Mayor’s motion, an the ground that the experience gi' vho past showed that Wanganui found it bard to he unanimous about sites for public buildings. Cr. Robertson instanced the railway station controversy which developed several years ago. The amendment to rexer the matter* to the Finance Committee was carried on the votes of Crs. Crowley, Halligan, Atkinson, Trott, Hales, Bennett ana Sperring. The Alayor, Crs. Robertson, Scott, Cotterill and Siddells were in favor of deciding the matter immediately by agreeing to the Law Society’s request.
