NOTED MUSICIAN
TO VISIT DOMINION EXAMINER FOR THE ROYAL SCHOOLS The son of a London barrister and journalist, Air. Michael Head, A.R.A.AI., will conduct the practical examinations throughout the Dominion this year for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Alusic, London. Air. Alichael Head showed signs of musical talent at an early age and entered the Royal Academy of Alusic in 1918. He won the Sir Michael Costa Scholarship for composition and held this for a term of live years, when he studied composition, piano, organ and viola. He won many prizes, including the Charles Lucas medal for orchestral writing. In 1926 Air. Alichael Head was appointed to the staff of the Royal Academy of Alusic as a professor of pianoforte. He has given musical recitals in London, the AVest Indies and Canada and has appeared at the Queen’s Hall and other London concert halls. He has frequently sang groups of his own songs over the radio to his own accompaniment. In 1929 he adjudicated at the first musical festival in Kingston, Jamaica, and paid a return visit there for the 1933 festival. Air. Alichael Head’s principal publications are his songs, many of which are well known in New Zealand. His unpublished works include a piano concerto, which was performed at the Royal Academy of Alusic centenary celebrations and has since been broadcast and performed in England and South Africa, a tone poem and a scherzo for orchestra. He has been an examiner for the Royal Academy of Music for some years in the United Kingdom and has conducted examinations for the schools in Canada and the West Indies.
