WRESTLING

WANGANUI SEASON OPENS TO-NIGHT FOKSGREN v. RUSSELL. SPLENDID AMATEUR BOUTS. What on paper looks like being the best wrestling bout so far this season, will take place in the Opera House tonight, when “ Cowboy’’ (Rebel) Bussed and Jack i'orsgren will elasii over the usual scheduled journey of eight 10-minute rounds. When Russell opened his New Zealand tu-ur at Auckland recently immediately after stepping off the boat ne created a real furoie by introducing the tactics which earned nim the icputation of being a wrestling “meanie" in the States. He provided the crowd with sucth a succession of thrills that they began to wonder what he was going to produce next, but underneath it all be made it apparent that he had little to learn about straight wiestiiug. Since his Auckland display Russell has gained au idea of just xv’bat New Zealanders want and the result is that he is one of the most entertaining and redoubtable men that have yet been seen in the Dominion. He is very powerfully built, fast and constantly aggressive, and always on toe alert tu seize any opportunity which presents itself, particularly if there is a possibility of his obtaining his deadly “suplex” hold. As for Forsgren, he really requires no introduction either. At Dunedin, recently he drew with ‘ * Lofty ’ ’ Blomfield id one of the most exciting encounters ever seen in the southern city. The two were at it hammer and tongs all the way and from start lo finisli the crowd's applause was deafening, So far Russell and Fursgren have not come together, and as both are very jealous of their records —neither has vet beaten the otbvr m the States—a really fast and exciting match -should result. The amateur bouts, prior to the b'g contest, s'houhl provide very exciting sport, for some of the best local talent have been matched. The star amateur bout will be between “Bren” Sheppard (a favourite with the local fans) and A. Tucker, late of Wellington. Intending patrons are advised to secure their sweats early as the booking is exceptionally heavy. The plans will be at J. Goss*and Son until 6 o’clock this evening.
