City Council last night from the Wanganui Alunicipal Labourers’ Inion and the Gas Workers’ I nion fur the council to collect union fees from employees. A commission of two and a-half per cent, was offered as compensation for this work. The council, by majority vote, decided to agree to the request, a former council having carried the work out. The town clerk (Air. George Murch) stated that the collection would not involve extra work, as the council already collected superannuation dues and insurance. Crs. G. 1. .Jones, J. D. Crowley, and F. C. Atkinson objected to the principle involved and voted against the motion. Durie Hill Recieat'o.i Gmti l. Juvenile Members of Library. Reference was made by Cr. J. J. Scott at last night’s City Council meeting, to the shrinkage ot juvenile members of the Wanganui Public Library and advanced the suggestion that the committee undertake some means of restoring that membership to its former strength. The adult section, he said, was increasing. Some concessions might be offered the younger members, and it would then be the committee's responsibility to hold them. Cr. J. Siddcl's, chairman of the Library Committee, said that the matter was already in hand. The library list had been perused carefully, and the acting librarian, Aliss K. L. Glenn, instructed to write oft' those who had not paid subscriptions for some time, institution of suitable lectures for the children was being undertaken. r J’he Alayor (Mr. XV. J. Rogers) pointed out that the establishment of libraries in various schools was responsible for a great deal of the falling off in juvenile members. Avenue Trams. Readjustment ui Liam lines in Victoria Avenue has been put in hand with the object of carrying toe double tracks to a point further up than Guyton street. The work will serve two purposes. It will improve the point.* facilities for trams travelling to Gonville and Uastlecliff and will also remove the try u stopping place in the Avenue just beyond Guyton Street, thereby obviating tne danger to human life liable to arise when the fire engine is called to tiavel the Guyton Street route and turn sharply into the Avenue. Pedestrians waiting on thi.- ■ .op have sometimes been suddenly surprised by the engine rounding that corner and have acted in a state of more or less panic. By moving the site of the tram stop to a point higher up. the council will obviate the risk of that happening. The work will not be concluded before Easter, but th>? excavations now in existence will be filled in temporarily so that the repairs will occasion no blockage to street traffic during the busy period.
