HOSTESS FOR AIRLINER
MANY APPLICATIONS. Afore than 50 applications have been received by Holy mans Airways, Ltd., for the two positions as air hostesses in the new 14-passenger Douglas aeroplane which the company is importing for use on the Bass Strait run (states the Afelbourne Age). The managing director of Holyniaus Airways (Captain Ivan Holyman), who has been interviewing applicants, expressed satisfaction at the high standard of applications received, but emphasised that the work of the air hostess would not be easy. One would fly in the aeroplane and the other woull be stationed at Essendon. They would interchange their duties according to a roster. Aboard the aeroplane, in addition to attending to people who might be air-sick, the hostess would be available to type letters and do other clerical work. Among other essential qualifications, the hostess must be competent at shorthand and typing, have a knowledge of nursing, must be between 20 and 25 years of age, of medium stature, a pleasing personality, and last, but most important, they must not be more than nine stone and a-half in weight. The new machine will arrive about April 9, and the hostesses will then be instructed in their duties. This will be the first occasion on which an air hostess has been appointed to a commercial air line in Australia, and it will bring the service into line with those ir.
