GILBERT AND SULLIVAN COY
PLANS OPEN THIS MORNING Plans will T»e opened this morning at the D.I.C. for the three performances to be given by the J. C. Williamson, Ltd., Gilbert and Sullivan Opjra Company next Saturday and Monday in the Opera House, Waiganui. At the Saturday matinee “The Mikado” will be presented, followed by “The. Gondoliers” on Saturday night and “ The Yeomen of the Guard” on Monday night. Savoyards throughout the Englishspeaking world are invariably thrilled I by the prospect of hearing yet another presentation of the immortal works, or some of them. It is just another o' Dose Gilbertian situations that nowadays there are millions more of these devoted nationals outside the borders of Savoy than in the region itself. Mr. Ivan Menzies has '•ome to embody the comic spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan so completely for New Zealand audiences that it seems altogether appropriate that he should again portray for ns the roles of tne magnificent humbugs, Ko-Ko. the Lord High Executioner, and that very celebrated diplomat, the Duke of Plaza-Toro. Gorgeously attired, these delightful ambassadors of nonsense quip and skip through Titipu, Venice and Barataria, turning things upside down with the gravest impudence till pompous dignity is ridiculous and humbug candour itself. Other artists returning are Gregory Stroud, baritone, Evelyn Gardner, contralto, and Bernard Manning, well-remembered for his impersonation of the Mikado. Winifred Lawson and Godfrey Stirling, soprano and tenor respectively, come | with a big reputation from the ID’Oyly Carte Company. Richard Watson, an Australian bass, will be heard for the first time here. Attention is drawn to the special matinee prices, with halfprice for children.
