KING’S BIRTHDAY DATES

WANGANUI SUCCESSFUL WINTER MEETING IN JUNE By “Kestrel.” Alter a break of some 36 years 3 the Wanganui Jockey Club is to ■ have the good, fortune to be permitted. to race on a public holiday, r for the winter race meeting is to 3 be held on Saturday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 23, the latter bej mg the King’s Birthday holiday. s The death of King George V., j whose birthday fell on June 3, meant that the general holiday was trunsf ferred to June 23, the birthday of 3 King Edward VIII., the former Prince > of Wales. Thus racing clubs through- ; out N'ew Zealand who had already t made arrangements for holding their r winter meetings on or near to June 3 ] made application to have the fixtures transferred to the new King's Birthe day date. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter . meeting has for many years been held late in May, the club enjoying the i Queen’s Birthday dates when Queen A’ictoria was on the throne. On her death in 1901, however, the Wanganui Club was left without a holiday date, - for King Edward Vll.’s birthday was on November 9, and when King George , came to the throne the club was unable to get the holiday date. . At a meeting of the executi •• committee of the New Zealand Racing t Conference at the week-end, however, 1 certain changes in dates were made to . fit in with the. birthday of King Edward A r iir. The Wanganui Jockey Club v.as granted June 20 ami 23 instead of May 11 and 16, the dates allocated when the Racing Conference approved the annual list of dates last July. The meeting will thus fall on Saturday and ) Tuesday, two holiday dates. The ) Napier Park Racing Club will also ’ race the same days, but it is felt that, j this wHI not affect the Wanganui » Jockey Club to any material extent. ) As a result of the alteration the Marton Jockey Club applied for the vacant Wanganui date of May 16 and the application has been granted, according to private advice received last night by the secretary oi' the Marton Jockey Club. ; In the South Island the Dunedin i Jockey Club was granted June 23, 25, 1 and 27. The Ashburton County Racing Club's dates has been moved ahead to June 6 instead of June 27. .If the Ash burton Trotting Club will accede to a. request to lake June 20 instead of June 13 the South Canterbury Jockey 1 Club will be. permitted to race on June ' 13 instead nf June 20. Otherwise, this ‘ dub will have to hold two days in ; May. OAMARU ACCEPTANCES | THIS WEEK'S MEETING. OAMARU, March 12.
