WON FOUR KENTUCKY DERBIES
Only one sportsman has ever won four Kentucky (U.S.A.; Derbies, and that sportsman is Colonel Ed. Bradley, the millionaire owner of the most luxurious gambling house on Palm Beach (U.S.A.). The names of his horses always begin with the letter “B,” whicdi brings him luck. Behave Yourself won the IBerby in 1921,! Bubbling Over won it in 1926, Burgoo King in 1932, and Broker’s Tip in j 1933. There is only one race of any | importance on U.S. tracks that Bradley i has never won; the Futurity at Belmont, in the fall. And that may be one; good reason why Bradley will bet you j even money, for any amount up to £lOOO, that any yearling you name will fail to win the race the following year. Of those wagers, he usually wins 70 per cent. It costs Bradley £6OOO a mont'h to keep his stables. Only twice in his racing career has he ever won morel than £40,000 a year in purses, and the i average in recent years has only been £26,900. The difference between that : and the £72,000 a year he spends on • racing must come from the money he | wins at the Beach Club, from private bets at the track, and from the income of his various other Florida properties.
