CARRIAGE OF PARCELS
POST OFFICE ENTERPRISE CHARGES TO BE REDUCED [ Per Pre-s Association ] WELLINGTON. Starch 13. Following close upon the inauguration of ai air-mail letter service within New Zealand, the Postmaster-General i Hon. F. Jones), announced another j Post Office enterprise. The charges for the carriage are being substantially redm-ed and the range of its, potential parcel business doubled by the decision io increase the maximum weight of parcels to be accepted from 141 b io 281 b. ’* T’iie parcel po.-t concessions.’’ slated the Postmaster-General, “commences on i Monday, the same day as the air ma l j service, and the new rates which are being advertised in the newspapers may iu* summarised us follows; For parcels up to 31b, fid : old rates, lib 6d. 21b Sd. ‘.lb 10d); over 31b to 71b, Is (old rate, 1* fid for 7ib); over 71b to I lib, Is tid (old rate. 2s 4d for 14ib); over 141 b Io 211 b, 2s; and oxer 211 b to a maximum of 28ib, 2s lid. Concessions are also being made in respect to certain classes lof bulky parce s and those containing I fishing rods ami golf clubs.'' I “1 confidently anticipate that the I business community will appreciate not only the reductions which are being made throughout the sea!?, but the greater elasticity of the new range of charges, and that the result will be a substantial increase in this class o> business. During the depression there was a decline in the number of parcelhandled by the Post Office, and this was probably accentuated by competition from road transport. The improved bus : ness conditions have been reflected in the greater numbers of parcels being delivered through the agency of the Post Office and I am looking forward to a substantial extension of this busi ness in the near future, which will justify the department in idopting a new scale involving on the basis of the present parcel post traffic concessions to Post Office customers amounting to £25,000 per annum.”
