Howard Hughes, the holder of the world’s speed record for land aeroplanes, broke the tran«-Continental record to-day whe-i he flew a Northrop monoplane from Los Angeles to NewYork non-fetop in 9 hours 27 minutes 10 seconds, which is 35 minutes 41 seconds under Roscoe Turner s previout record set. in 1934. Bv using an oxygen tank he maintained an altitude of 18,000 feet most of the time. He averaged 260 milef an hour for approximately 1450 miiert and at times reached a speed of 295 j miles an hour.
