THAMES JOCKEY CLUB

THE ANNUAL FIXTURE. PROSPECTS FOR TODAY. to ‘‘Chronicle.") A ICELAND, Jan. 15. Not for very many years has the Thames Jockey Club drawn such good fields as tho>e that have been paid up for on the opening day to-morrow of its annual fixture on its picturesque course. Ten is the smallest field engaged, and the largest is 21, in the non-winners’ handicap event. There has been a lot of rain in the north tor over a week, past and therefore the going, usually very hard on this track, may be perfect. An interesting contest at this meeting will be the Brush Hurdles, which has drawn a line field of 10, including several promising novices. Betting will be conducted on the win and place system. it is a long time since there was a hurdle race decided on this track, high-weight events being substituted, so that it is very pleasing to note the potential success of the reintroduction of jumping contests. Among the likely novices are L Allegro, Dark Princess, British Columbia, King Motor, Solomon, Moss Va.e and Teddy Boy, all of whom are displaying promise. The principal event to-morrow is the Goldfields Cup, with a field of ten. Top of the list is Sir Alb, who won on the second day of the Dargavilie meet’ng at Avondale under 8.1, and at his only appearance at Ellerslie recently finished up fifth in the race won by Heritage. That form was good. Gay R is? did well to finish strongly into second place in the Summer Cup at Eller.li? and while she has a lot idore weight now, in the weaker company, she will run on at the finish. Master Nor-. ;,1 will come up fresa, but Miss Lu may n«»w be able to turn the tables on him, when he beat her s. neck in the Kawa kawa Cup. There are distinct possibilities about Keith Lu, who has been running well under difficulties among the good hacks, and as a stayer he should be a dangerous lightweight. Bonny Gay will like it if the course is heavy, but Day Wind is a. possibility, if reports that he is under a cloud are proved to be exaggerated. His form suggest> goml wins for this gelding. Grand Talk has done nothing for some time, but Lagoon and Lady Zinnia are useful over a middle distance, it is an even field, with Gay Rose only requiring to run up to her best form to be hard to beat. Lucidus did not fare so well on t.ie Taranaki trip as was expected, but he may show improvement in the Flying Handicap to-morrow, even if he will have to concede good weight toothers. Prince Acre went a fine race in the big sprint on the final day at LI eis lie and as he has shaped well prev i ,usly at Thames his chances are g »od. Corunis has not shown form for a long time and she will be bracketed with Solomon, who however is also in the hurdles. Coronis displayed good form here twelve month* ago. Two g • I jack sprinters r.re Tin Lap and B» lky--ian, while Wahine Reibi may no* be far from them in speed. However. Prince Acre and Tin Lap impress most. The remaining events promise to pr » dure stirring racing, with seven* i horses being produced twice. The form horses engaged to-morrow are the fo: lowing:— 11.45: Trial Handicap. —Maf eking. .
