The Coast Guard has reported that 34 members of the crew of the freighter lowa perished to-day when the vessel was smashed to pieces by a ninety-mile-an-hour gale which disrupted shipping on this section of the Pacific Coast. Early this morning the lowa wirelessed that she was in difficulty off Peacock Spit at the mouth of the Columbia River. A Coast Guard cutter witnessed the breaking-up of the . lowa, but high seas prevented tossing over a rescue line. Men could be plainly seen grasping the rigging as the vessel sank. Aid is being rushed to several other vessels reported to bo. in distress, but it is not yet known if there are other casualties.
