GIRL GUIDES
CONFERENCE IN CHRISTCHURCH For the first time Christchurch was the scene of a Dominion Girl Guido Conference, which opened on Tuesday. Some 50 delegates are attending the business session of the conference, over which Miss Ruth Herrick, of Napier, Chief Commissioner for New Zealand, is presiding. The conference will sit until this evening. So much business is to be transacted that little time remains for social activities. On Monday evening Miss Herrick gave a lantern lecture in St. Andrew’s Hall, showing English girl guides on a cruise to the Baltic, and slides of girl guide rallies in New Zealand. Another entertainment was held on Tuesday evening in St. Luke’s Hall. Miss Duthie (Wellington) and Miss McHardie (Hawke’s Bay) arranged a camp-fire evening, and the rangers tooa over the second part of the programme. The guiders had their turn on Wednesday, when they gave an entertainment, also in St. Luke’s Hall. Miss Lettice Loughnan gave a talk on music, and the guiders’ orchestra played selections'. Mrs. Edgar Stead invited the conference delegates to see her beautiful garden at “Ham” yesterday afternoon and to have tea. The business of the conference will conclude this morning, after which Miss Bromley Cocks, Canterbury Provincial Commissioner, and Miss Dorothy Anderson, District Commissioner, will each entertain at large luncheon parties for delegates. The conference will conclude with a big guiders’ garden fete at Cashmere House.
