AMERICA’S CUP

CHALLENGE WITHDRAWN AMERICAN ATTITUDE OBJECTED TO LONDON, Nov. 26. Announcing that he has withdrawn his challenge for the America’s Cup of 1936, Mr. C. R. Fairey has protested against the attitude to the contest adopted by the Americans. ‘‘The race has now been reduced to a contest between expensive yachts which only syndicates can normally afford. The American entries are all syndicated, whereas British yachts are privatelyentered. If the American attitude is to remain unmodified it is .difficult to see how any private owner will be able to afford to compete. I challenged with a hundred-ton yacht because 1 feel the race would be more sporting if less expensive boats could be entered. The New York Yacht Club told my representative that my challenge was not acceptable and was unorthodox. J therefore have withdrawn and left the field to Mr. Sopwith if he wishes to challenge. ’'
