MEETING OF COMMONS SCRAMBLE FOR SEATS PAR’D' LEADERS CHOSEN [ British Official Wirelear ] RUGBY, Nov. 26. The new Parliament met for the first time this afternoon in the House of Commons. Captain Fitzroy, who was elected Speaker, has served as Speaker in the last four Parliaments, and was warmly congratulated by the Prime Minister, Major Attlee and Mr. Lloyd George, father of the House. The latter said the supremacy of Parliamentary institutions depended on the general conviction that every opinion in the nation should have an opportunity of fair and free expression. The Speaker would maintain that freedom of speech which had made the position and fame of the British Parliament the admiration of the whole world. Although there have been several informal meeting of Ministers, of which one took place in Downing Street this morning, to-morrow’s meeting of Cabinet will be the first to be held since October 23, and it will also be the first meeting since the new Ministerial appointments were announced last Friday. It is understood the time of Cabinet to-morrow will be almost entirely occupied with domestic affairs, and consideration will be given to the terms of the King’s Speech, which will be road by His Majesty when he formally opens the new Parliament on IDecember 3. ■ LIBERAL LEADER SER A. SINCLAIR CHOSEN LONDON, Nov. 26. Sir Archibald Sinclair has been elected Leader of the Liberals. Some hours before the Commons assembled members scrambled for seats, Mr. Lansbury ousting Lady Astor from her usual place. Captain Fitzroy was unanimously elected Speaker. Mr. Lloyd George, presiding at the Liberals’ meeting, accepted the position of Liberal whip. The Liberals have consequently now 21 instead of 17 members in the House of Commons. BRITISH LABOUR MAJOR ATTLEE LEADER SECOND BALLOT FIGURES LONDON, Nov. 26. The Parliamentary Labour Party elected Major Attlee leader with 58 votes, Mr. H. Morrison 43, and Mr. Greenwood 33.
