MAJESTIC THEATRE “SOCIETY DOCTOR.” Following the success of “Men in White,’’ the medical drama in which Clark Gable and Myrna Loy scored one of their greatest hits, Metro-Gold-gyn-Mayer brings to the Majestic screen, starting to-night, its new story of hospital life, “Society Doctor.” In the new feature the romance within hospital walls is played by Chester Morris and Virginia Bruce. “Society Doctor,” in which a lifetime of love, drama and pathos is crowded into the brief span of eight hours, tells the story of Dr. Morgan, young chief interne in an emergency hospital, and of his friendly enemy, Dr. Ellis, and their competition for the love of Madge Wilson, a pretty nurse. COMMUNITY SING A community sing was held in the Town Hall, Taihape, on {Saturday evening under the auspices of the Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association. The singing was led by Mr Will Mason, the well-known radio entertainer, while Mr Frank Crowther, also of fadio fame, presided at the piano. The function was largely attended and the audience entered into the spirit of the thing with enthusiasm and a very pleasant evening resulted. Interspersed with the community singing were a number of items by , local artists, including Mr F. Mcj Sweeney (elocutionary items), Mr E. ’ Hayes (humorous recitation), Miss I Smith (violin selection), and Mrs Lux- ! | ton (vocal solo). Mr Frank Crowther also entertained the audience with a number of pianoforte selections, which were loudly applauded. A most enjoyable entertainment was brought to a close with the singing of , the National Anthem. POLITICAL ADDRESS MR W. *T. CRAWFORD AT TAIHAPE Mr W. J. Crawford, Democrat candidate for the Rangitikei constituency, , ! addressed the electors at the Town . Hall, Taihape, on Friday evening. The Mayor (Mr L. B. H. de Lautour) pre- | sided. ! The candidate trenchantly criticised j the Government and explained the I policy of the Democrat Party, which, I he said, favoured the readmission of I 5-year-old children in schools. The party ho represented was strongly opposed to political contro 1 of I education. The Democrats stood for development of secondary industries j and- reduced taxation. He also thought 1 that radio B stations should be encouraged. He thought that the Doimin’on's defence should bb developed ; bv strengthening the air force and the ’ navy. I GENERAL NEWS ! A most enjoyable dance was held at iMataroa recently under the auspices of I the Mataroa Tennis Club. There was •a large crowd present and bright tuneIful music was provided by the Sundowners’ Orchestra. Extras were (played by Mr. C. Carrington. Two ' Monte Carlo waltzes were held, the winners being Miss L. McNeill and Mr. C. John and Mrs. Whyman and Mr. L. Howard. A cake donated for competition by Mrs. F. Ward was won by Mr. G.
