LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI EAST CLUB PAST SEASON’S AFFAIRS the annual report lire Wanganui East Lawn Tennis Club’s fourteenth annual report, to be presented at the annual general meeting on Monday, September 2, 1935, at S p.m., is as follows: 1 iic past season was officially opened on October 13, 1934, by the president, -Mr. E. Walpole, a large number oi members and visitors being present, A dainty afternoc-n tea was dispensed by the ladies. For the first time in the history of the club, balls were not provided except lor opening day. This new arrangement was conducive to the smoother running of club affairs and relieved the committee of much woriy. Correspondingly, the subscriptions were reduced, an increased membership being the result. Another innovation was dispensing with the tea levy, refreshments being served buffet fashion. Grounds Committee.—The season was a record one for heat, but except for the uneven surface, the courts ■stood up very well. Every effort has been made to provide excellent play ing conditions for the coming season, extra trop-dressing and sowing being done, while a lot of wire-netting has been renewed. There will be ample scope for working bees before the grounds are ready for opening day. Social.—The activities of the social committee resulted in a garden parly being held in the club grounds in December, and the annual dance and presentation of trophies in June, the latter proving most enjoyable. ThesJe efforts did not receive the support from members they deserved. Match.—The usual handicap chain pionship and Easter two-life events were held, and were completed in excelent time. An A Grade team was entered in the associationinter-dub competitions in conjunction with Gonville, while B ami C Grade teams also competed in their grades, the Cl team being runner-up in the town section. Owing to so many inter club competitions, no- outside visiting clubs could be entertained, and no challenge buttons were arranged. Finance. —The linances can be regarded as fairly satisfactory, considering the membership. Some items of expenditure may Mem unduly high, but the conditions of the courts justilied the heavy outlay. The various de tailed accounts show the position dearly, ami it will be obvious that tin* dub could accommodate twice the pre sent membership with substantially I lie same expense. II that happv, position could be attained, the linancis of the dub would be on the soundest possible basis. I hanks.—The committee wishes to ex.press its appreciation of the generous actions of two vice presidents Mrs. (Ciipl.l Bonner, who is the donor "I two handsome trophies for the handicap combined doubles event, an<| to Mr. liiisscll Grace for a welcome donalion. 'I hanks arc also accorded to the valiant few who worked so strenuouslv to make the garden party a success, anti to the members of various worKing parties
