BOUT AT NEW YORK “BUDDY" BAER'S SUCCESS KNOCK-OUT IN FIRST ROUND Received Aug. 30, 9.10 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 29. “Buddy’’ Baer, the former champion’s younger brother, scored a first round knock-out over Jack Doyle, the Irish heavyweight, at Madison Square Garden to-night. Baer weighed 17.0* and Doyle 14.8. WOMEN AS “SECONDS” COUNCIL’S RECENT RULING. MORE INFORMATION WANTED. u lt was one of the brightest things that has appeared 01T the boxing horizon for a number of years, yet the council sits on the idea immediately,” declared Mr. 11. G. Appcrley, chairman of the management committee of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association, at its regular meeting in Hastings on Wednesday evening, when mention was made of the appearance of Mrs. Aitken as second to her son, Billy Aitken, of Wellington, in the ring recently in Auckland. Ihe New Zealand Boxing Council wrote asking associations to note that at the last meeting of the council it was decided to notify associations that in future females should not be per mitted to act as seconds to boxers, nor in any other official capacity at tie ringside. Associations were also informed that they would be well advised to incorporate in their rules a rule bearing on this matter. “It seemed to me quite a bright idea and it certainly created considerable interest not only at Auckland but throughout the Dominion,” said a member. “1 think the council was too hasty altogether in coming to the de cision it did.” “Well, the appearance of a woman in the ring would certainly be a novelty and one that should have a public appeal,” said Mr. .1. Dexter. Mr. .1. D. (Donovan considered that the council had taken the right step in taking the matter in hand immedi atcly for, he said, there were obviously occasions when a woman second would be an embarrassment. “ I fail to see why the council should dismiss the mailer summarily as it has done. I think we should be given morj information on the subject before adopting a rule as suggested,” said the chairman. After some further discussion it was decided to write to the New Zealand council asking for further information.
