Andrews, the New Zealander, easily won his opening match in the National tennis championships at Forest Hills, defeating Frank Broida 6—3, 6 —4, 6 —3. Although play was sometimes ragged on a poorly-kept field court, Andrews played a hard driving game in which he scored many placements. Broida showed his best form in the second sot. which was carried to 4 —all, but Andrews broke through his service in the ninth game pnd win his own service in the tenth from 4U love. Other first-round results include:— Gene Mako (U.S.A.) defeated J. Brugnon (France), o—6, 6 —2, 7—5, 6—l. W. 1.. Allison (U.S.A.) defeated Henry Brunie (New York), 6 —o, 6—2, 6—2. F. J. Perry, the Wimbledon champion, will play his first match on Friday. In the women’s singles, Mr« Mud-ford-King (Britain) defeate.-l M’ss Diana Popo (Montreal), 6 —o, 6—o. Miss K. Stammers (Britain) defeated Miss Gertrude Dwyer (New York), 6—o, 6—2. Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) defeated Mrs Blumenthal (N&w York), 6—3, 6—4. Manuel Alonzo beat Berkeley Bell 6—4, 7—9, 6—B. 7—5, 6—4.
