CHILDREN'S GARDEN CIRCLE

Dear Members. — It. is with a sad heart this week that I have to write and tell you that one of our little members, Keith Thomas, of Makirikiri, has passed away after a long illness, and I ask you all to join with me in an expression of sympathy to his sisters and brothers and parents. I also thank his little pal, Bcri • Bason, for informing me of his death. He was Beric’s best pal ami 1 know just how sad it is for Boric also. Now dears, every week brings us nearer to our great show. I can hardly realise it is so close. . There is .'-till such a lot to do. However, 1 do hope each and all of you are leaving no stone unturned to win the shield for your district. Ingredients are still wanted for our big birthday cake, so I do ask members lo send in as early as possible any ingredients for our birthday cake. NOTICE FOR ALL. D. —Taking the bud. 2. —Name insects that attack the chrysanthemum and methods used to get rid of same. 3. —Name disease that attacks chrysanthemums, and control of same. 4. —Name disease erf gladioli corm, and prevention and cure of same. 5. —Name insects that attack gladioli plants and cure for same. 6. —Give a brief outline of cultural requirements of gladioli from time of planting to storage of corms. 7. —Give an outline of preparing seed boxes ami sowing of seed. 8. —Why should seedlings be watered before and after transplanting? 9. —Give the positions required tor the following: A. —Sweet Peas. B. —Pansies. C. —Gladioli. D. —Ch ry sa nthcm u m s. .10.—G-ive cultural requirements of daffodils —soil, position, manuring, lifting. All examination papers to be returned to “Carnatio” by September 15. Members can send in both papers No. I and No. 2 if desired.
